Artistic Freedom: Creating While Incarcerated
East Window Gallery
For this exhibition at East Window Gallery in Boulder, CO, Impact Arts presented works by three artists incarcerated at Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility: Hector Castillo, Sonny Lee, and Mario Rios. All three men are gifted painters and storytellers who use their artwork to convey deep and uncomfortable truths about our system of mass incarceration.
Opening Reception: June 26th 2025, 7-9:00pm
Panel Discussion and Reception: Aug 23rd 2025
In the spring 2024, Impact Arts and Prison Art Experience partnered to produce Creating Community in Confinement. at the Colorado State Capitol. This exhibition featured work by artists that are currently or were formerly incarcerated in the state of Colorado, all reflecting on their experience of community while serving time and the important ways that art-making and creativity can foster a sense of connection.
The artworks selected to hang in the Capitol rotunda, the Governor’s office, and the Lieutenant Governor’s office respond in various ways to the following questions: What communities do you feel yourself to be a part of, both inside and outside of prison? How does one build and maintain community inside prison? What role might art and creativity play in that process? What barriers have you faced (if any) in finding or building community?
Exhibition Dates: March 25, 2024 - June 20, 2024
